A formulation R&D lab needs equipment in six groups: dispensing, processing for your dosage forms, physical testing, analytical instruments, stability storage, and supporting utilities and documentation. Plan from your product pipeline, buy the essentials first and phase the rest.
1. Dispensing
- Analytical and top-loading balances with calibration weights
- Sieves or a vibro sifter
- Dispensing area with dust control
2. Processing: oral solids
- Lab blender (double cone, V or bin)
- Rapid mixer granulator or planetary mixer
- Tray dryer or fluid bed dryer
- Multimill or cone mill
- Lab rotary tablet press with tooling
- Capsule filling machine
- Coating pan
3. Processing: topicals and liquids
- Overhead stirrer and homogeniser
- Water bath or jacketed vessel
- Tube or bottle filling for samples
4. Physical testing
- Hardness, friability and disintegration testers
- Dissolution apparatus (USP apparatus 1 and 2)
- Bulk and tapped density tester
- Moisture analyser
- Viscometer and pH meter
5. Analytical
- UV–visible spectrophotometer
- HPLC with a suitable detector
- FTIR for compatibility studies
- Karl Fischer titrator
6. Stability, utilities and documentation
- Stability chambers for long-term and accelerated conditions
- Purified water, compressed air, HVAC and power backup
- SOPs, equipment logbooks, calibration and qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ) records
Planning tips
- Start from the dosage forms and tests you will actually run in the next two years.
- Compare at least three quotations, including service support and spare parts.
- Allow space and utilities for the next phase of equipment.
- Plan qualification and training time before the first project.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most important equipment in a formulation lab?
It depends on your dosage forms. For oral solids, a balance, blender, granulator, dryer, tablet press and dissolution apparatus are the core.
Should I buy an HPLC at the start?
If you develop products that need assay and impurity testing regularly, yes. Otherwise, use an outside laboratory until volume justifies it.
Does equipment need qualification?
Yes. Plan installation, operational and performance qualification, with calibration schedules, before use in development work.
